Another Day

Quick

Got some the things done in the lab today. For the last month, Iv’e been recording a project for my boy Quick. It’s been a while since we’ve unpacked the equipment and opened up the basement. We used to record in Traktion by Mackie, and would still be today if a hard drive failure did not cause us to loose the unlock key. It uses a  very simple and Intuitive Interface that’s great for beginners. Anyway, I had to learn how to record in Fruity Loops.

If you want to learn a skill, but may not want or have the opportunity to continue your education, search YouTube. Originally, we wanted to have our individual audio files mastered at a professional studio, which we would have had to pay for, but, with the help of some YouTube mixing and mastering tutorials (shout out to John Miller), we feel, we have achieved a professional sound. It’s not “Clive Davis” professional but it sounds close enough, and were happy enough with it that we will produce the the entire LP ourselves.  With An AKG condenser microphone and a Mackie Satellite Fire Wire interface, we’ve always have been able to produce quality sound, but didn’t  know enough about compression and equalization to produce a professionally mastered  sound.

To all amateur musicians, photographers and artist, the internet is an endless learning tool.  A college education or internship is obviously the best way to learn the skills of a chosen profession, but many lessons are available online

Other than that it’s been a low-key day. Took a few photos and did some quick edits because practice makes perfect.

The Orton Effect

People (Orton Effect)I was looking through our digital camera today and came across some pictures I took in Chicago last November. I thought with some decent edits, they would be worth sharing. Wanting to do a dream like effect on the pictures as I had done to some of my mobile photos, I googled “gimp dream like effect”. Google introduced me to Vishaaa and these edits come courtesy of her Orton Effect Tutorial. “The Orton effect is named after photographer Michael Orton who first used the technique. Combining two photographs, one image is sharply focused and over exposed, the other, out of focus and over exposed. The combination of blurring and over exposure will give you the dreamy like mystical effect…” I followed the tutorial exactly until the last step. Instead of setting the duplicate layer to overlay, I set it to multiply and lowered the opacity. I did some obvious things (desaturate) and some not so obvious things (tweak the curves and white balance), but nothing too heavy. Check out the tutorial, pay respects to Orton and edit some photos! Enjoy!

Note: The photo of the Keyboard and the photo above have the Orton Effect. You can compare the difference of the feature photo and the photo at the bottom of the gallery. The latter does not have the effect.

The First Shots of 2013

Image

Happy New Year friends! Hope you brought it in like it was 1999! This morning I had an immense hangover and am still in recovery now at 11:50 pm, but despite my head and stomach aches I decided to take a few pictures for today’s post.  Such passion. I only took a few and didn’t come out with anything great, but these are the best of the bunch. My first edits if 2013. Enjoy!

The Road of Photography

Video

The digital revolution has changed the landscape of photography. This 10 min. documentary by Eliot Grigo and Abby White follows some of Maine’s photographers and educators as they explain their feelings towards the new digital process.

…After you watch, check out Eliot’s blog. He takes great photos.

Being New to Photography (just born new), maybe my opinion does not count but I believe this is a situation of adaption. Yes, there is less of a need for professional photography than there was 20 years ago, but in the words of Jan Rosembum, “there will always be a need for people with good taste and skill”. Be like Sarah! Embrace the technology and it will amplify your creativity. Second to the mind, the computer is the ultimate creative tool. Learn to Use it.

Instagram’s New Terms of Use Agreement

admin-ajaxRecently, there has been a lot of talk about Instagram’s new terms of use agreement. I myself was confused as to what the new terms were so I did a little research.

On December 17 Instagram announced that, effective Jan.16 2013, it will claim the perpetual right to sell users’ photographs without payment or notification. As you may have heard, this announcement caused a user uproar unprecedented in the companies history. According to AppData.com it lost around 4 million daily users between Dec.18 and Dec. 28, 2012. Since the backlash Instagram has re-worded the language in it’s terms of use and the New Terms will be effective Jan. 19 2013.

They state that Instagram will not claim any ownership of content that users will or have posted on the service. Instead, effective Jan. 19, 2013, users will grant Instagram a non-exclusive, fully paid and royal-tee free, transferable, sub-licensable, worldwide license to use the content that they upload. Under these terms the user will not grant Instagram ownership of their photos, rather the rights to use and sub-license them, free of charge. Instagram will be able to license your photos to third-parties without your Knowledge. You, the user, will still own your content and the right to sell, promote and license your work, but Instagram will have those rights as well.

For an up and coming artists as myself who is trying to build a brand, that may not be such a bad deal. It’s free exposure. Instagram has already proven to be a great promotional tool by many up-start brands who have sprung from the use of the social engine. I wont be upset or offended if Instagram sells my pages likeness to Pepsi. “Drink Pepsi Like Tanner Squash”. My Instagram and WordPress pages will blow up.

Maybe one day you will see your pictures in a companies ad campaign. Other people will too! Tag Them! It would be great for me to be able to say to a potential client that my photos have been used in ad campaigns. Of course, I won’t know it until I stumble across them myself. Maybe not so positive for a mother who finds her children in an ad but positive for me. Great if the photo is tagged with my name and logo.

I don’t mind Instagram selling my mobile photos without imbursing me. I would mind them claiming ownership of them, but in the end, I didn’t upload them to sell them. I uploaded them to share them. Instagram put together a platform that inspired me to pursue photographic passions I didn’t know I held. For that, maybe they have earned a kick-back.

When I heard of this new terms of use agreement I motioned to delete my account, but after a little digging (flower pot like) I decided to keep it. Do you use Instagram? Are the terms good for You? Let me know what you think.

Shot: My 2012 in Pictures

Everyday Citizen

Hello friends. I came across a post today by Little Red Jenn entitled Weekly Photo Challenge: My 2012 in Pictures. Originally, I re-blogged the post to share her photos with you, but the new post showcased my photos instead of hers. Her photos are great and you can check them out here, but she inspired me to put together a collage of my own favorites from the passing year.

I started with a selection of 80 out of around 200 photos. From there I continued to cut the list down to what I thought were the very best. That was not the easiest of tasks because as you artists know, we are attached to our work. After some deliberation the group became what you will see below. If you follow this blog your’e probably tired of seeing some of these photos and I swear I will never re-post any again, but I thought this would be an appropriate post given the time of year. These photographs aren’t mind blowing or timeless, but I am impressed with them indeed. After all, I am NOT a photographer and most of them were taken with a phone.

I hope that you who are reading can appreciate these mobile photos and are inspired to share your best shots of 2012! I would Love to see them! Please Comment if you decide to do so as to direct me to your post. Thanks for reading. Enjoy! and Happy Early New Year!

A shot I took with my Cannon Powershot SX40 HS.  I’m a novice photographer with no formal training, but with the help of Scott Photo Graphics I was able to come up with some descent edits of this photo using The Gimp photo manipulation software. A free and open source equivalent to photo shop. You can view Scott’s “Dramatic Skies” tutorial here, and can download The Gimp here. It’s an easy way to beef up your digital photos.

#The Instagram Effect

In 24 years, I have never been interested in photography. For 20 of those years I wasnt’t interested in social media.  I thought I was too cool for Facebook until I found out how cool it actually is. I didn’t know a lot about Instagram either upon it’s Android release. My friends were using it, but there not creative people like me. They’re self-portrait people… Continue reading
